Yokohama Central Wholesale Market
The Yokohama Central Wholesale Markets like the famous Tokyo Tsukiji Wholesale Market, was established by local governments under the Wholesale Market Law, to trade fresh foods indispensable to our daily life such as fish, meat, vegetables, fruit, flowers, etc.
It is difficult to store perishable foods for a long period as it spoils easily. In addition, the production of perishables is greatly affected by natural conditions such as the weather; so the price is subject to greater fluctuation than other goods. The wholesale market, aims to bridge the producers and consumers, with smooth distribution of perishables and stabilization of diet through fair trade and speedy transactions between wholesalers and jobbers in safe, clean and functional facilities.
The Yokohama is the second large city following Tokyo, so Yokohama Central Wholesale Market is second largest wholesale market in the Kantoh district.

Split-up Tuna fish
Elaborate cutting and preparations are performed on the large fishs such as Tuna and Swordfish. Frozen tuna and swordfish are often cut in half with large band saws. Fresh tuna is carved delicately with extreme long knives (some well over a meter in length) called oroshi hocho, maguro-bocho, naga-bocho or hancho hocho by the shop owners for the retailers.
